The Apostle’s Creed was originally a profession of faith
required of coverts to Christianity before they were baptized. As a formula of belief, it goes back in
substance, if not in words, to the twelve apostles who received it
from Christ.
The Apostle’s Creed contains the truths which everyone who
calls himself Christian must accept on the word of God, that is, on faith. Belief in the revealed truths of the
Apostle’s Creed is the foundation of Christianity.
The Faith given to us by Christ was handed down by the Apostles to their successors, the universal bishops. These bishops under the leadership of the pope who is the bishop of Rome, have the duty to preserve the truths entrusted to them by Christ.
The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
